Ethiopia/Cush Empty Ethiopia/Cush

The Hebrew word for Ethiopia is the word Cush and is translated either Cush or Ethiopia in the King James Version.  It is not to be confused with modern-day Ethiopia.

Ezekiel mentions that Cush borders Egypt.

Ezekiel 29:10
Behold, therefore I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from the tower of Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia.

Genesis states that Cush is encompassed by a river.

Genesis 2:13
And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.

Please note that the river Gihon is speaking of a river coming out of Eden.  Pre-flood geography has to be extremely different from post-flood, but I imagine that rivers would be renamed with names that were familiar to the survivors, so the Gihon and other rivers stated in Genesis as coming out of Eden would quite likely be non-existent after the flood and other new (or greatly altered) rivers would have been given familiar names.  Also, after being adrift in a boat for a year, it would be impossible to determine where they started from in relation to where they landed.  Suffice it to say, that about all we can garner from this verse is that the land of Cush was encompassed with a river.

Since we know that Cush bordered Egypt, the river Gihon is either a reference to the Nile, or is lost to antiquity, since the Nile is the only large river near Egypt.  Also, the Nile is never mentioned in the Bible, so it must have been known as something else.  Note: this river Gihon isn’t to be confused with a spring bearing the same name near Jerusalem.

Looking at the Map of Modern Day Africa, it appears that Cush would be to the west of the Red Sea, south of Egypt, and east of either leg of the Nile river.  This would be portions of modern day Sudan, Ethiopia, and all of Eritrea.
