Suggested Previous Reading:  Mountains, Heads, and 1st Head (Nimrod's Empire)

Revelation 17 tells of a series of empires, five of which are past, one that is current to the first century church, and one that is to come yet in the future of the first century.

Revelation 17:9-10
And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.  And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Nimrod's is the first kingdom mentioned in the Bible.

Genesis 10:8-12
And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.  He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.  And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.  Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.
Accad is an alternate spelling of Akkad which was the capital of Akkadian Empire.  The Hebrew word for Babel is always translated as Babylon except for 2 verses in Genesis.  Babylon was the capital of the Babylonian Empire.  Asshur and Nineveh were both capitals of the Assyrian Empire.

The first of the three empires listed above that is mentioned in the Bible is the Assyrian Empire which reached it's zenith between 721 and 633 bc.  Around 722 bc, Assyria took the 10 tribes of Israel from Samaria into captivity.

2 Kings 17:6
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
As the map below shows, the area of Nimrod's kingdom is wholly contained within the borders of the Assyrian Empire as would be expected of a head of the same beast. The 2nd Head of the Rev 17 Beast Assyri10
