The 6th Head of the Rev 17 Beast Empty The 6th Head of the Rev 17 Beast

Suggested Previous Reading:  Mountains, Heads, 1st Head (Nimrod's Empire), 2nd Head (Assyrian Empire), 3rd Head (Babylonian Empire), 4th Head (Persian Empire-Fars), and 5th Head (Alexander the Great's Empire and Diadochi)

Revelation 17 tells of a series of empires, five of which are past, one that is current to the first century church, and one that is to come yet in the future of the first century.

Revelation 17:9-10
And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.  And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Nimrod's is the first kingdom to be mentioned in the Bible.  Of the cities built by Nimrod or those who came out of his kingdom, the Assyrian Empire is the first to be mentioned.  The Babylonian Empire defeated the Assyrians around 612 bc.  The Persian Empire defeated the Babylonians around 538 bc.  Alexander the Great defeated the Persian Empire around 328 bc.  Alexander's diadochi in Mesopotamia was defeated by the Parthians, as a sort of successor to the Old Persian Empire.

Mesopotamia came under Parthian rule in the mid-2nd century BC, when it became part of the Parthian empire.  At its height in the early 1st century BC, the Parthian empire included all of the Iranian plateau and the Tigris-Euphrates river valley. The Parthians were replaced (c.A.D. 226) by the more vigorous Sassanid dynasty.  The Sassanids were the  last dynasty of native rulers to reign in Persia before the Arab conquest in c.640 AD.

As is the case of Alexander and his diadochi, there is no historical reference to this occurance of the Persian Empire in the Bible.

As the map below shows, the area of Nimrod's kingdom is wholly contained within the borders of both the Parthian and the Sassanid Empires, as would be expected of a head of the same beast.

However, between the Parthian and Sassanid occupations, the Roman Empire took control of all of Mesopotamia.  In 63 BC, the Roman Empire conquered the remaining Greek Seleucid Empire but doesn't come into Mesopotamia until 116 AD and only for 2 years before abandoning it due to constant rebellions.  Then 80 years later, Rome retakes all of Mesopotamia.  By 363 AD, Rome is in decline and is unable to maintain the outer fringes of its empire so abandons it to the Sassanid Empire.

So, there is room for debate as to who is the 6th Head of the Rev 17 Beast.
