The capital of Assyria was Assur/Ashur and later Ninevah.  Both cities lie near the Tigris River in northern modern day Iraq.  However, at its height, it was a vast empire.

2 Kings 19:36
So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
Jonah 1:2
Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
Jonah 3:6-7
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.  And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
The above verses show that the king dwelt in Nineveh, which would have made it the capital during the time these verses reference.

It is interesting to note that modern day Assyrians are the Christian minority in Iraq.

Assyria was once a great empire.  However, when looking at regions referenced in future prophesies, we need to concentrate on the origins of the empire.  That would be the area in dark green in the map below.
