When Abram was 75 years old (2083 AM), God promised him that he’d be a great nation and promised the land of Canaan to his descendants.  Up to this point, Abram had no sons because his wife, Sarai, was barren. (Gen 12:1-7)

After a period of time, God reaffirmed his promise to Abram that he will have an heir of his own offspring and went into greater detail on the land that he would give to them. (Gen 15:1-21)

Ishmael (Hagar)
After Abram had been in Canaan for 10 years, Sarah attempted to bring about the promise by giving her servant, Hagar, to Abram to be a wife to him and bear his heir. This brought about strife between Sarai and Hagar. (Gen 16:1-4)

Even though Hagar’s child would not be the heir of promise, God still saw to it that he would be blessed. (Gen 15:5-16)

As recorded in Genesis chapter 17, when Ishmael was 13 years old and Abram was 99, God reaffirms the promise to Abram, changing his name to Abraham (father of a multitude) and Sarai’s name to Sarah.  As a token of the covenant, God has Abram circumcise all the males of his household.  When Abraham pleads for the life of his son, Ishmael, God promises that Ishmael will sire 12 princes and will be a great nation.  Genesis chapter 21 records that after Isaac was weaned, Sarah had Hagar and Ishmael cast out.  Muhammad as well as many modern day Arabs claim their lineage back to Abraham through Ishmael.

Isaac (Sarah)
Abraham was 100 (2108 AM) and Sarah 90 when Isaac was born (Gen 17:17).  Isaac is Abraham's sole heir (Gen 25:5).

Zimran (Keturah)
After the death of Sarah, Abraham took another wife, Keturah, although she is referred to as a concubine (Gen 25:1-6)  Abraham had 6 more sons with Keturah: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.  These were sent away to the east with gifts before Abraham died so that only Isaac obtained the inheritance.

Jokshan (Keturah)
Jokshan is one of the patriarchs of modern day Arabs through his sons, Sheba and Dedan (location of modern day Saudi Arabia).

Medan (Keturah)

Midian (Keturah)
Midian was the father of the Midianites, of which Moses eventually takes a wife (Exodus 2:15-21).

Ishbak (Keturah)

Shuah (Keturah)
